Bali Cafe, Run by Folks with Special Needs

A unique and increasingly popular Ubud Restaurant offers diners meals, a unique experience, and a chance to provide meaningful jobs for disabled workers.

The Piduh Charity Cafe is located on Jalan Yeh Pulu, Blahbatuh, Gianyar, on the outskirts of Ubud.

Without exception, everyone who works at Piduh Charity Cafe has “special needs,” ranging from being afflicted with autism and cerebral palsy to Down Syndrome.

The founder of the Piduh Charity Cafe, Nyoman Sri Wahyuni, explains that the unique eatery was established to provide meaningful employment for Bali’s Widya Guna Foundation’s “special need” clients. The Foundation is dedicated to educating and training young people with “special needs” so that, when they reach adulthood, they can earn a livelihood.

Several clients of the Widya Guna Foundation are in their “20s” and have already embarked on their work careers after receiving the necessary training from the Foundation. New young people are now taking their place at the Foundation’s School, hoping they will also learn skills and obtain job opportunities to pursue meaningful and productive lives.

Nyoman Sri Wahyuni admitted that when the children with special needs reached their 20s, they were eager to secure employment. Because of this, we created the restaurant in Ubud in 2023.

Nyoman said the Piduh Charity Cafe employs nine “special needs” workers, such as cooks, order processors, cashiers, bartenders, and waiters/waitresses. Adding: “So that our staff can work professionally, intensive instruction using visual illustrations is used in the instruction covering each step of the cooking and preparation process.

The restaurant offers a limited menu of moderately priced selections.

Waiting staff work in a system where every table and seat is numbered to ensure a smooth ordering and service flow.

The restaurant and kitchen are operated under expert supervision by people experienced in working with a diverse special needs workforce.

The restaurant is open from 10:00 a.m. until 2:45 p.m. These relatively short working hours are designed to keep demands on stamina and concentration in easily manageable periods of time.

Looking ahead to the future, the Widya Guna Foundation said the restaurant has been designed to permit life-long employment for employees with special needs. The Foundation is also considering options for caring for special needs workers in their twilight years and suitable accommodation to provide a pleasing experience for these individuals.
