Round #2 - Feats of Derring-Do in Sumba, East Indonesia

Space Still Available for Pasola Festival in Sumba February 25-28, 2019

In response to popular response to the Pasola Trip Organized in early February, additional Pasola Festival Package trips are now available February 25-28, 2019.

The yearly Pasola Festival of Sumba Island in the Nusa Tenggara Timur islands of Indonesia traces its roots to the ancient Marapu religion and is a thanksgiving and harvest festival, the timing of which is linked to the appearance of “nyale” or sea worms on Sumba’s shorelines and the full phase of the moon.

When community elders decree the time is right, competing teams of men on horseback, each numbering some 100 members bearing sharp spears to be thrown at the opposing side in a series of fierce battle charges, gather to do battle at traditional gathering points.

Although not without casualties, in recent years efforts have been made to fit the spears with dumdum points to prevent fatal impalements. When death and injury do occur, the blood shed is thought to guarantee a fertile harvest in the coming year.

The Pasola Battle takes place in valleys edged by small hills where thousands of Sumbanese natives, dressed in magnificent traditional woven cloths, come to witness the field of battle.
