A Trio of Outraged Feminists in a Single Exhibition

‘Maladjustment’ – An Exhibition by Arahmaiani, I GAK Murniasih, and Mary Lou Pavlovic at Neka Gallery, Ubud - October 26 – November 24, 2019

As part of the 2019 Ubud Writers and Readers Festival October 23-27, 2019 three international female artists will undertake a joint exhibition at Ubud’s Neka Art Museum running from October 26th until November 24, 2019.

Entitled "Maladjustment” the exhibition will feature the work of three internationally recognized contemporary women artists, I GAK Murniasih (Bali, Indonesia), Arahmaiani (Yogyakarta, Indonesia), and Mary Lou Pavlovic (NSW, Australia). Exhibiting together for the first time, the exhibition provides insight into the contemporary feminist movement across three diverse cultures while examining society’s enduring need to police and repress the female body. Although all the works presented are more than 10 years old, they remain relevant in the contemporary context in how they represent male violation and control of the female body.

The recent #metoo movement, highlighting the assault of women bears renewed testimony to the timeliness of the current exhibition. Maladjustment also takes place in Indonesia against the backdrop of a debate regarding a law against sexual violence now being debated by the National Parliament and the case of Nuril, an Indonesian primary school teacher, jailed for reporting sexual harassment by her school principle who charged her with defamation for publishing his sexual improprieties online.

Maladjustment presents I GAK Murniasih’s paintings that are partly derive from sexual assault by her father. Arahmaiani’s ephemeral work, Do Not Prevent the Fertility of the Mind poining to the dreadful conditions women have faced throughout history, for example, lack of adequate birth control measures and state intrusion on the female body under the Suharto regime. While Mary Lou Pavlovic’s, “Liar!” street poster focuses on violence against women in Australian football.

The exhibition is open daily from October 26 until November 24, 2019 from 5:00 pm-7:00 pm
