Ananda Sukarlan in Concert in Bali November 16th and 17th, 2019

Bali will host two appearances by a world-class Indonesian composer-pianist when Ananda Sukarlan will perform concerts at the Padma Ubud Resort on Saturday, November 16, 2019, and again on the following night at the Pulmeria Ballroom of the Padma Resort Legian on Sunday, November 17, 2019.  In performances dubbed “Bagimu Negeri” (Dedicated to My Homeland), Sukarlan will perform his own composition "Raspsodia Nusantara" together with compositions by Kusbini, AT Mahmud, and Ismail Marsuki among others.

In “Bagimu Negeri” Ananda Sukarlan presents the world premiere of his new composition “Variations on Kusbini’s Bagimu Negeri” that incorporates the original piece in combination familiar melodies and rhythms of well-known folk songs.

Sukarlan is an internationally-acclaimed Indonesian pianist and composer listed among “The 2000 Outstanding Musicians of the 20th Century” and Cambridge University’s list of “Who’s Who in Music.”

Born in Jakarta in 1968, Sukarlan moved to Europe after graduating from high school at age 17. He then graduated summa cum laude in 1993 from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Den Hag. The winner of numerous awards and piano competitions, he has performed as a featured pianist with orchestras and ensembles worldwide including Berlin, Rotterdam, Spain, Paris and Wellington, New Zealand.

In 2000, he celebrated the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Portugal and Indonesia by performing as a soloist with the Portuguese National Symphony Orchestra. He has recorded at least 14 CDs performing original compositions and the complete piano works of Santiago Lanchares, David del Puerto, Jesus Rueda, Toru Takemitsu, Peter Sculthorpe, Amir Pasaribu, Trisutji Kamal, and Theo Loevendie.

His compositions cover a wide range of musical genres including opera, ballet, orchestral music, arias, choral works, chamber music, folk music and piano books used globally for the study of piano. His prolific body of work has been the subject of numerous doctoral studies by students and musicologists in the USA, Europe, and Australia.
