Padma Presents – Bali’s continuing series of recitals and concerts by internationally acclaimed performers presented by Padma Resorts continues on Saturday, March 28, 2020, with a classical program of music - “On the Edges of Romanticism” at the Padma Resort Ubud.

As inferred by the title for the March 28th Concert, the evening will highlight music existing “before, during, and post” the “Romantic Era” of classical music. Fittingly, Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Trio No. 1 opens the evening signifying the dawn of the romantic period. While the final composition of the evening, Antonín Dvořák’s  Piano Trio No. 3, reflects the latter phase of “Romanticism” - a period that drew its inspiration from nature, literature, philosophy, and poeticism.

Sandwiched in between these two pieces from opposite ends of the Romantic Era will be Piano Trio No. 1 by the great Russian composer of the 20th century - Dmitri Shostakovich. In a life characterized by polystylistic musical musings, Shostakovich wrote this romantic piece in his youth and provisionally named it “Poème” - reflecting his then passing dalliance with the romantic idiom (later disavowed).

On the Edges of Romanticism

In this musical exploration of one of music’s most seductive and indulgently beautiful periods, “On the Edges of Romanticism” at the Padma Resort Ubud will bring together on a single stage three of the world’s most promising young musical talents: Giovani Biga (Violin), Jonathan Kuo (Piano), and Goncalo Lélis (Cello).

 Giovani Biga

The March 28th appearance by Giovani Biga represents his 7th triumphal appearance with Padma Presents.

Living and studying in Berlin, “Biga” splits his time between performing as a soloist, servings as a concertmaster for symphonic orchestras, and performing in classical ensembles on stages in Europe, Asia, and his native Indonesia.

A recent winner of the Stockholm International Violin Competition in Sweden, at just 24 years-of-age, Giovani Biga’s lengthy and impressive pedigree as a professional musician is remarkable for someone so young who made his first solo orchestral debut at 14. He has performed with almost every major orchestra and symphony in Indonesia, including The Jakarta Concert Orchestra, Nusantara Symphony Orchestra, Jakarta Sinfonietta, Twilite Youth Orchestra, Jakarta String Ensemble, Concordia Orchestra, Trust Orchestra, and The Butterfly Symphony Orchestra.

His growing list of international awards came to include winning honors at Chamber Music at the Arnuero XXIV International Music Competition in Spain and Auryn Kammermusik Wettbewerb 2016 in Germany.

Magna Cum Laude graduate from the Hochschule für Musik Detmold (Germany), where he studied with Prof. Ulrike Anima Mathé, he went on to become the recipient of a much-coveted scholarship Gesellschaft der Freunde und Förderer der Hochschule für Musik Detmold (GFF) and DAAD Preis. This was followed by a Deutschland Stipendium Scholarship enabling his current program of graduate studies at the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” Berlin under the guidance of Prof. Ulf Wallin.

Sought after as a soloist, ensemble player, and tutti orchestral member both in Indonesia and abroad - Giovani Biga’s growing musical biography includes stints as Concertmaster with the Twilite Youth Orchestra, Jakarta Concert Orchestra, and Hochschulorchester Detmold. As a tutti player, he has performed with the Hamburger CamerataMinden Kammerphilharmonie, and Detmolder Kammerorchester

In 2013, he was selected to represent Indonesia in the Asian Youth Orchestra performing in many prestigious concert halls around Asia.

Jonathan Kuo - Piano

Born in Bandung, West Java, in 2002, Jonathan Kuo began studying piano at the age of 7, giving his first solo recital to critical acclaim only six years later at the age of 13. Destined for musical stardom from a very early age, he has won numerous competitions, including the Indonesian Steinway Youth Piano Competition (2012, 2014, 2016, 2018), 5th ASEAN International Chopin Piano Competition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Kawai Asia International Piano Competition, Thailand Chopin International Competition (2014), Medan International Piano Competition (2015), and the Concerto Encouragement Prize at the Virginia Waring International Competition in Palm Spring, USA.

He has also appeared with Indonesia’s leading orchestras, including the Jakarta Concert Orchestra under the baton of Avip Priatna, and the Jakarta Sinfonietta with Iswargia R. Sudarno. He has also appeared as a soloist and accompanist with the renowned Indonesian soprano, Isyana Sarasvati.

In October 2018, Jonathan Kuo became a "Young Steinway Artist" - conferred upon a select group of talented who are given the distinction of affiliation with the Steinway Artist Family, and access to the worldwide resources of Steinway & Sons.
