Ubud Prepares for Royal Cremation on Friday, March 2, 2018 of Anak Agung Niang Agung
A cremation ceremony for Anak Agung Niang Agung – a member of the Ubud Royal Household – will be held on Friday, March 2, 2018.

As reported by Balipost.com, a massive funeral pyre is being constructed for the deceased who is the mother of the former Regent of Gianyar, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati. The cremation tower (bade) used in the cremation will have seven tiers that will necessitate the temporary relocation of electrical wires as the procession makes its way from the Palace to the cemetery where the actual cremation will take place.

The cremation tower will have a total height of 24-meters and require between 20-30 men from the Royal Palace to hoist the platform holding the tower from the Palace to the place of ignition.

In the period leading up to the actual cremation ceremony, a number of preparatory ceremonies will be held at the Ubud Palace, including a ceremonial bathing (nyiramin) on February 15, 2018. Heralding the start of the cycle of ceremonies that conclude with the cremation a month later, prayers and offerings (nuasin karya) will be held on January 31, 2017 - the date of the full moon.

Members of the public and tourist visitors are generally welcome to attend and witness cremation ceremonies in Bali. However, it is strongly suggested that appropriate Balinese dress be worn and a native Balinese accompany visitors attending the cremation to ensure respectful etiquette is maintained.
