Wayang Listrik Meets Gedebong Goyang

A Night of Outstanding Contemporary Balinese Entertainment at ARMA Museum on Saturday, December 1, 2018

Join a fun evening dedicated to preserving Balinese culture in the digital age at the Agung Rai Museum on Saturday, December 1, 2018, sponsored by BASAbali - Wiki – a community-based organization working to promote the use of Balinese in daily life.

On that evening the people of Bali and BASAbali -Wiki will receive the 2018 International Linguapax Award - the world's top award for language revitalization projects. The award will recognize BasaBALI’s Wiki’s innovative free online Balinese-English-Indonesian Wiki dictionary and virtual library ("BASAbali Wiki"). The Wiki acts as a dynamic and ever-evolving public cultural resource that engages the support of scholars and community members in strengthening the Balinese language and other local languages as means of supporting traditional Balinese culture.

The evening promises to be entertaining, eclectic, and electric beginning with the well-known Grup Gedebong Goyang – a comedy group of Balinese-speaking Western Women who shed a hilarious light on cultural and linguistic stereotypes in Bali.

Also appearing will be ARMA’s Children Gamelan and Dance Group - Sanggar Kumarasari.

Following the presentation of the Linguapax Award to BASABali Wiki, the main event of the evening will be a rare appearance of Wayang Listrik (Electric Shadows) created by one of Bali’s most accomplished puppet masters, I Made Sidia. Wayang Listrik, also known as Wayang Skateboard because the puppeteers uses skateboards to achieve locomotion across the stage, is a fusion between a traditional wayang (shadow puppet) performance and modern technology, again underscoring the adaptability of local Balinese traditions in the modern age of technology. Not to be missed!

The evening is free-of charge to local identity card (KTP) holders and US$10 to others.

The show begins at 7:00 on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at ARMA Agung Rai Museum of Art on Jalan Raya Pengosekan in Ubud.
