Bernard Harrison at ATEC

Harrison is the former CEO of the Singapore Zoological Garden and the man credited with developing the creative vision and innovative approach to zoo management now synonymous with that facility. Addressing the world leaders and innovators in animal training and enrichment techniques gathering in Bali, Harrison will share insights and experiences gleaned from his stint as the “Boss of the Singapore Zoo" during which he pioneered The Great Rift Valley of Ethiopia Exhibit depicting an Ethiopian village; The Fragile Forest containing a miniature eco-system; and the world renowned Singapore Night Safari.

Famous for creating enclosures that resemble playgrounds instead of cages. His “open” concept also extended to human enclosures as well, creating see-through fencing and basins surrounded by plants in washrooms – an idea Harrison says was inspired by a Bali holiday.

When the Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) was formed in 2000 to oversee the operations of the Singapore Zoo, the Jurong Bird Park and the Night Safari Harrison was appointed the CEO.

After leaving that position in 2002, he established the consultancy firm of "Harrison and Friends" specializing in zoo planning and design.

ATEC at Bali Safari and Marine Park

The Bali Safari and Marine Park is a 40-hectare park that is home to more than 400 animals representing 60 species found in Indonesia, India and Africa is hosting ATEC 2013.

A recognized leader in captive animal breeding and animal enrichment programs, the safari park features animals in natural and spacious surroundings, a water park, a boutique safari-themed hotel and the 1,200 seat Bali Agung Theatre – home to a daily theatrical extravaganza featuring hundreds of dancers, actors and musicians – both human and animal.

World leaders and innovators in animal training and enrichment techniques for use with captive animal populations are traveling to Bali to trade insights and share cutting edge methodologies for use by zoos, sanctuaries and animal parks.

As another keynote speaker at ATEC 2013 will be Steve Martin of Natural Encounters, Inc - a recognized animal trainer who has worked with Disney’s Animal Kingdom, San Diego Wild Animal Park, AZA Animal Training School and the Elephant Management School in Hamburg Germany.

Also on hand will be Valerie Hare of The Shape of Enrichment, Inc. (SHAPE). A recognized guru of animal enrichment and a worldwide ambassador for best practice in animal care, Valerie serves on the board of International Conference on Environmental Enrichment Committee (ICEE) and Bear Care Group Board of Directors.

Those attending ATEC 2013 will also encounter Joe Coe who has designed zoos in more than 40 countries including the Bali Safari Marine Park. Coe will conduct walking tours while sharing his expertise on creating enriching animal exhibits.

Hans Manasang, General Manager of the Bali Safari and Marine Park, says the hosting of ATEC 2013 is a natural outgrowth of the Park’s commitment to the tender care of its animal population and educating the community of the need to foster a mutually beneficial coexistence with the animal kingdom. “By gathering experts from around the world at ATEC 2013 we hope to share and obtain ideas and insights that will compliment the Park’s commitment to captive breeding and animal husbandry programs,” said Manasang.

The Bali Safari and Marine Park is actively involved in conservation efforts of a number of endangered species including Bali’s iconic Bali Mynah (Bali Starling), the Sumatran elephant and the Sumatran Tiger

Manasang says the Bali Safari & Marine Park has an unwavering commitment and dedication towards providing the highest standards in animal husbandry and care. Taman Safari has placed an enormous amount of focus in developing the very best animal care facilities and invested heavily into training young animal care professionals whom have the ability to provide the very best care for their animals.

Led by Dr. Purwaningtyas Kusumaningsih, The Bali Safari animal 'enrichment’ team are gearing up for ATEC 2013 conference eager to meet with delegates and colleagues from international and Indonesian zoos and animal care facilities to advance in their professional development areas of animal management.
