Bali’s Lake Beratan located in the mountain lake district of Bedugul was recently cited as one of the world’s 20 most beautiful lakes.
As reported by Radar Bali, this unexpected honor for Lake Beratan also brings with it certain challenges, according to I Wayan Mustika who is operational manager for the Ulundanu Beratan Tourist Attraction.
According to Mustika, the growing popularity of the lake for Bali visitors is also increasing the threat of pollution from the pleasure crafts used by those spending the day on the volcanic lake.
Despite many calls from tourism operators and those living on the lake to limit the number of boats allowed to operate on the lake, the regional government of Tabanan has yet to set any clear and firm standards in that area. Local officials from the Transportation, information and Telecommunications Service who are entitled to set such limits say the lack of any clear guidelines from Jakarta on the carrying capacity of recreational boats on lakes of a given size is barring them from introducing any limits.
A site plan is currently in development for the Lake Beratan area causing officials to hope that limits on the number of ships permitted to operate on the lake will be included in the final plan.
Meanwhile, officials from the Transportation Ministry have promised to personally inspect the lake in the very near future.
