Donít Go There Just Now

In Wake of Worsening Relations Between Jakarta and Canberra, Australian Issues Heightened Caution on Travel to Indonesia

(11/22/2013)

In a worsening diplomatic rift between Indonesia and Australia and Jakarta’s decision to recall its ambassador from Canberra, the Australian government has modified its travel advisory to Indonesia.

While the general caution from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs for Australians to “exercise a high degree of caution” in traveling to most areas of Indonesia remains unchanged. demonstrations held outside the Australian Embassy in Jakarta on November 21, 2013, have prompted the additional warning to “monitor local media, avoid protests, maintain high levels of vigilance and security awareness. Australians should expect traffic delays and restricted access to and from the Embassy during demonstration activity.”

Australians are also warned to call the Embassy before paying a visit.

The worsening state of relations between Indonesia and Australia marks its start from recent revelations from intelligence-community whistle-blower Edward Snowden who released documents showing Australia had been bugging the telephone of top Indonesian officials, including the Indonesian President and his wife.

Confronted with the revelation of spying on a declared ally, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott refused to apologize to President Yudhoyono. This prompted President Yudhoyono to tweet his displeasure with the Australian leader, calling him arrogant.

In anticipation of possible protest in Bali, police have place additional personnel outside the Australian Consulate in Denpasar.

Growing anger with the Australian leader has caused President Yudhoyono to suspend bilateral cooperation with Australian in a number of areas, including immigration and military defense.

The Indonesian President has sent a formal letter to the Australian Government demanding a complete explanation surrounding the electronic eavesdropping on his family and inner political circle.
