The province of Bali is seeking to be named host to the National Sports Week (Pekan Olahraga Nasional – PON) in 2016.
PON draws athletes in a large number of branches of sports from every province of Indonesia and is held once every four years.
Bali’s intent to seek to host PON in 2016 was announced by the Governor of Bali on Friday, November 29, 2013.
The deputy governor of Bali, Ketut Sudikerta, has been designated to travel to immediately travel to Jakarta to personally declare Bali’s desire to host PON 2016. While there, Sudikerta will undertake consultations with the Minister of Sport and the Minister of the Interior to verify Bali meets all the qualifying conditions to host PON.
As reported by NusaBali, Bali is competing for the right to host the games with the province of West Java, seeking to unseat current plans to hold the event based in Badung.
The last PON was held in 2012 in Riau province. The preparation of facilities for those games and the execution of the games themselves was soiled by a wide-ranging corruption scandal that reached all the way to the Presidenttial Cabinet, with a former Minister for Sports now under investigation by the National Anti-Corruption Agency (BKKN) for malfeasance in the administration of funds intended to be used to host PON in Riau.
