The continuing tug-of-war over the location for a proposed new airport in North Bali entered a new phase with the announcement by the Regent of Buleleng that villages surrounding Kubutambahan are favored for Bali’s second air gateway.
Beritabali.com reports that the regent Putu Agus Suradnyana revealed the official preference for Kubutambahan during a radio interview on a Bali radio station on Tuesday, December 3, 2013.
Suradnyana told his listeners: “I have discussed this with the Governor and urged the use the land that is no longer agriculturally productive. It seems that the location surrounding Kubutambahan will be chose for the airfield’s location."
The regent said land rights must be finally secured before moving ahead with plans to build the new airport. Further future impediments to the new airport include securing funding for its construction from provincial, central government and possible private investors sources.
Two areas in North Bali are under consideration for the new airport, Sumberkima villa in Gerokgak and the village of Kubutambahan.
Proponents of the new airport insist it will help achieve a fair distribution of development between Bali’s heavily developed South and the much less-visited North.
