During a visit to Sideman in East Bali, the legally embattled regent of Karangasem, I Wayan Geredeg, told his constituents that the sand and gravel trucks that cause traffic jams as they haul away excavations should not be viewed negatively, but, instead, seen as positive signs of development.
Geredeg, reported by several Bali media to be under indictment for corruption in a piping infrastructure project in his regency, was quoted by The Bali Post saying construction projects are needed for development and a more equitable distribution of wealth across all areas of Bali.
For this reason, Geredeg told the press that he is in the process of championing a proposal that would extend the I.B Mantra Highway to Karangasem and Singaraja as a means of reducing poverty in the region.
During a “roadshow” across the regency of Karangasem, Geredeg symbolically presented 22 wheelchairs, two walkers and other appliances for disabled residents living in the Sideman areas.
