Republika.co.id reports that those violating area designated as “no smoking zones” in Bali can expect to undergo immediate trial and sentencing.

The head of the Provincial Enforcement Agency for Bali (Sautan Polisi Pamong Praja – Satpol PP, Made Sukadana, said the trial and sentencing procedure at the "scene of the crime" for smoking in public is expected to serve as a deterrent to smokers. “They will be tried for violating a public misdemeanor,” said Sukadana on Wednesday, December 11, 2013.

He said that in the process of enforcing Bali Provincial Regulation Number 10 of 2011 on no-smoking zones, the Satpol PP would be cooperating with prosecutors and the Denpasar District Court. Also participating in the crackdown and “instant trials" will be representatives of the Civil Service (PPNS), the Bali Police and the Provincial Health Department.

Those caught in the anti-smoking sweeps will immediately stand trial at the scene of their crime. This is being done to speed up the legal process.

Among the No Smoking Zones that will be targeted for the sweeps and instant tribunals are public health facilities, places of education, houses of worship, public transport. Workplaces and public spaces.

At an initial sweep 18 smokers were cited from which 5 were given warnings and 13 fined on the spot for Rp. 50,000 (US$4.00).
