Bali has been included in a list of areas noted by the National Police as potential targets for terrorist acts during the Christmas and New Years Holidays.

The Bali Post quotes the chief of the National Police, General Sutarman, who said on Monday, December 16, 2013, “The terrorists are still alive, so all of their movements I report to the regions."

Indonesia’s top law enforcement officer said that based on his observations, terrorists were now active in Poso (Sulawesi), Solo (Central Java), West Nusa Tenggara, East Java, Lampung (South Sumatra) and other areas.

General Sutarman said he has shared his information and observations with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono regarding the threat of terrorist attacks over Christmas and New Years.

“Preventive steps must be taken to avoid any attacks. We (the police) will approach extremists. We will protect the public who must also practice caution,” said Sutarman.

The head of the information division at the National Police Headquarters, Brigadier General Boy Rafli Amar, said the police have established priorities for “Operation Candles” (Operasi Lilin) to ensure peace and order over Christmas and News Years.

14 areas of Indonesia have been given top priority for “Operasi Lilin”: North Sumatra, Metro Jaya (Jakarta), West Java, Central Java, East Java, Bali, East Kalimantan, Papua, the Special Administrative District of Yogyakarta, Central Sulawesi, North Sulawesi, East Nusa Tenggara, Maluku and Central Kalimantan.

“Operasi Lilin” gets underway on December 23, 2013 and ends on January 1, 2014. A total of 92,000 police personnel nationwide will be deployed as part of the special operations over the holiday.
