The dates and the themes for the 2014 Ubud Writers and Readers Festival have been announced.
Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Ubud Writers ad Readers Festival will take place October 1-5, 2014, a week earlier than past festivals in order to accommodate major cultural events taking place in October in Ubud, chiefly the Karya Agung Ceremony.
The theme adopted for the 2014 Ubud Writers and Readers Festival is to honor Saraswati- the Hindu patron goddess of wisdom and knowledge.
An elegant goddess, Saraswati is often depicted with a book in hand, standing atop a lotus, flanked by a swan and a peacock. In Bali, Saraswati is day in which books are honored with offerings and allowed to “rest” by remaining unread on that day.
The Ubud Writers & Readers Festival is organized by Yayasan Mudra Swari Saraswati – a non-profit foundation. The festival was founded by Janet DeNeefe, who also co-founded of the Foundation in an effort to help Bali recover from the tragic terrorist attacks of 2002 and 2005.
The Ubud Writers & Readers Festival has become a world class literary event encouraging “free and unfettered dialogue that transcends race, creed and gender to celebrate the universal appeal of story and open a window to the treasury of words and ideas.”
Program details will be announced over time via the official website for the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival
