Republika.co.id reports that the Denpasar Bali Police have arrested one of the suspected perpetrators in the homicide of American expatriate Paul Latourell (51).
“We have one perpetrator under arrest,” said police commissioner Djoko Hariutomo on Monday, February 24, 2014.
The arrested man, identified by police only with the initials MS, reportedly hails from outside Bali and is believed by police to have been one of several men who murdered the well known community activist on February 15, 2014.
Djoko did not reveal any more details on the man’s identity, saying his identity should be temporarily concealed while police conduct a manhunt for the remaining assailants. “If we tell you (his name), the others will get away,” he explained.
Police continue to develop the details surrounding the brutal stabbing murder of Latourell. “For the meantime, the motive for the attack is jealousy,” said Djoko.
Latourell was a gay activist in Bali working as a volunteer to raise funds for a medical clinic and a foundation dealing with specific health needs of the island’s gay community.
An autopsy is being carried out on the body of Latourell with a cremation service scheduled for Thursday, February 27, 2014.
