The Jakarta Globe confirms that Indonesia’s second-largest Islamic organization – Muhammadiyah has decreed that the holy fasting month of Ramadan 1435H will commence on June 28, 2014.
Using mathematical formulas and astronomical observations, Mhammadiyah calculated the month of Ramadan starts after sunset June 27th.
The Islamic calendar measures the start of a new day from sunset.
Muhammadiyah's leader, Dim Syamsuddin told The Jakarta Globe: “According to astronomical calculations, the Muhammadiyah decided that the fasting period starts on Saturday, June 28; Idul Fitri will fall on Monday, July 28; and Idul Adha or, the Day of Sacrifice, will be on Saturday, October 4.”
Last year Indonesia’s a largest Muslim organization Nadlatul Ulama (NU), using physical observations decreed the start of the month of Ramadan as occurring one day later than the date announced by Muhammadiyah.
The now-disgraced Ministry of Religious Affairs traditionally tries to mediate between Muhammadiyah and Nadlatul Ulama by convening meetings to arrive at a consensus on the official date for Ramadan’s commencement.
Muhammadiyah, meanwhile, has made it clear they have no desire to attend a meeting with Nadlatul Utama to discuss the matter further.
