The Norwegian government is poising to take a decision that may curb the number of Norwegian students studying abroad, including Bali.

Education Minister Torbjørn Roe Isaksen has issued a statement declaring his intent to limit overseas study opportunities for Norwegian students - courses pejoratively known as "bathing studies" in which student travel to exotic locales to do physical education course, learn skiing, do health studies and participate in program the Minister depicts as a waste of taxpayers’ money.

A number of Norwegian colleges engage commercial companies to operate programs providing courses on sports, nutrition and personal training in exotic places, including Brazil and Bali. Isaksen said such "bathing studies" have "little academic and cultural value," adding that the government should limit these courses in the future.

Programs of study winter and summer sports, personal trainer certificates, health, nutrition, nursing, languages, social studies, economics and leadership. The destinations where courses are offered include Chamonix, Florida, Brazil, Bali, Mexico, Cape Town, Sydney, New York and Paris.

Isaksen said the will ask colleges to close course offering Norwegian studies in non-Norwegian locales. “I strongly doubt the academic quality is good enough and I find it very difficult to see the academic relevance of a number of these courses.”

The Minister said that the review of these programs is underway and only those with compelling academic reasons for remaining abroad will be allowed to continue. Students who have signed up for courses to be offered in 2013 will not be affected by any change to be introduced by the Norwegian government.
