The trial continues of Agustinus Brata Kusuma, the Captain of the MV Ocean Express, charged with negligent homicide in the death of two female Japanese divers who went missing while on a diving excursion at Nusa Penida continues in Denpasar.
On Tuesday, June 3, 2014 State Prosecutors asked for five years in prison the Captain who is without legal representation due to his lack of funds.
Furukawa Saori, the Japanese dive master leading a group of seven divers, told the Court that she could not see the boat when her group resurfaced after their dive.
The divers were left floating in the ocean for more than 24 hours. 2 of the group drowned while five eventually made it back to shore. One woman’s body was found near Sanur Beach while the other were discovered weeks later floating off the shore of East Java.
The Captain has told the court that he did not abandon the divers, but did leave them briefly to purchase fuel. When he returned to the dive location he was unable to relocate the dive group.
