Prabowo Subianto sent mixed and worrisome signals to certain segments of Bali’s tourism community, delivering a somewhat xenophobic message at a campaign rally held at Limintang Field in downtown Denpasar on Saturday, June 28, 2014.
Resounding an anti-foreigner theme that has formed a consistent part of his campaign platform, Prabowo told his audience that future leaders must be cautious and not allow the profit of Indonesia’s tourism sector to be siphoned off by foreign countries.
Quoted in Beritabali.com, Prabowo said: “If we are not careful, our wealth will not be enjoyed by our own people. Bali is an example. Big Tourists come here. We must question and be careful. Don’t let the profit they (the tourists) bring be taken away by others who are not of our nation.”
Prabowo called for vigilance because he proclaims a desire to safeguard national wealth for all the Indonesian people.
“This is our battle; the duty we embrace. We have a strategy of continuing the mandate of SBY. That which is missing we will add. That which is good we, we say is good,” explained Prabowo.
Prabowo says Indonesia is at a crossroad. Standing before thousands of supporters, Prabowo expressed his appreciation for Indonesia’s current president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
“At the close of his leadership, we must give thanks for SBY who has brought Indonesia to its current state,” he said.
Prabowo admitted that managing and leading Indonesia is not an easy task. He also admitted that Indonesia is now the fourth largest nation in the world. Continuing, he said: “Every year Indonesia adds five million people. We are acknowledged as the fifth richest nation in the world."
