Residents of Banjar Giri Darma in Ungsan and adjacent to the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Monument Park (GWK) have blocked the main access road to the park with piles of soil and banners on Sunday morning, August 24, 2014, preventing people from entering the park visited by thousands of each day.
As reported by Beritabali.com, the closure of the road by local residents was done in retaliation for a perceived failure by the management of the Park to keep promises made to the surrounding community to build an access road to a local cemetery and a village temple complex.
“The action of closing the entrance to GWK was done after the management of GWK did not keep its promise to the community. Earlier, the management of GWK promised to provide a ‘rurung agung’ access road for the people to access the village cemetery and the village temples for the village of Ungasan. However, that promise made three months ago has not been kept by the management of GWK,” explained Wayan Kurma, the village chief of Giri Darma on August 24.
The villagers are pledging to continue the blockade until the promise by the management of GWK is kept.
Added Kurma: “Basically we want to meet with the owner of GWK - the representatives of Alam Sutra, not their representatives in Bali. We need to do this to avoid empty promises.”
The management of GWK has not commented on the protest that effectively prevents access to the Park. Security guards are turning visitors away, saying there is a problem and they are following the orders of their supervisor.
