The John Fawcett Foundation (JFF) recently checked the eyes of its one-millionth patient in its ongoing village eye-screening program that has successfully restored sight to 45,000 poor people in Indonesia.

All services provided by JFF for the poor are free-of-charge and funded through the generous support of local and international donors.

JFF has been working with the poor in Bali for 25 years, offering eye screening and free cataract surgery. The first mobile eye clinic was flown from Perth to Bali by the Australian Air Force in 1991 when it began travelling throughout Bali bringing cataract surgery to remote villages and distant townships.

Today, a dedicated team continues to offer villagers eyesight-screening program. Those blinded with cataracts receive sight-restoring operations, eye infections are treated with medicinal eye drops, and those needing corrective lenses are provided glasses.

Routine visits are made to primary schools where children and their teachers are given eye examinations, providing eyeglasses for those who need them. More serious eye problems are also discovered during these visits and treated by the JFF team of medical professionals.

Over the years JFF’s work has spread beyond Bali with the mobile eye clinic paying visits to Lombok, Sumbawa, Kalimantan and East Java.

Impressed with high standard of medical assistance and surgery provided by JFF, the Government of Indonesia has formed a strong working relationship with JFF. As a result, the Indonesian Air Force recently mobilized an airlift of the mobile eye clinic using a C130 Hercules Aircraft to the remote island of Alor in eastern Flores where 99 people received sight-restoring operations. In February 2016, the Clinic will be “flying” once again, this time travelling to Yogyakarta with the Indonesian Air Force.
