BaliPost.com reports that the operating losses incurred by the Trans Sarbagita Bus System are extremely high. While the bus system receives government support totaling Rp. 18 billion, the annual revenue generated by the public bus service is only Rp. 2.5 billion.
The chairman of Commission III of the Provincial House of Representatives (DPRD-Bali), I Nengah Tamba, said on Tuesday, October 25, 2016: “Why do we need a budget allocation of Rp. 18 billion? This is a huge allocation in the face of the minimum use of the busses.”
Tamba said the operation and future viability of the Trans Sarbagita Bus System must be reviewed.
The Lawmaker said the main goals cited when establishing the Trans Sarbagita Bus System of easing transportation and reducing traffic congestion have not been achieved, prompting him to question if the money given to Trans Sarbagita by the province might be used to better effect is other areas.
The Trans Sarbagita Bus System commenced operations in 2011.
The service is predicted to carry a total of 870,000 passengers for all of 2016.
