Mysaling.com.au reports “Walk on the Wild Side” – a 58-foot sailing yacht under the command of Garth Curran has won line honors crossing the finish line at 1:00 am in Bali on Sunday, May 14, 2017 - 6 days and 15 hours after it departed Fremantle in the Fremantle to Bali Ocean Classic Yacht Race.

Co-captained by New Zealander Rod Keenan, “Walk on the Wild Side” finished more than 30 hours ahead of the next boat, positioning it to win both IRC and YAH handicap divisions in the process.

For most of the race, “Walk on the Wild Side” managed to maintain a speed that was two knots below the prevailing wind speed.

The 6 days and 15 hour time beat the inaugural race’s record time turned in 30 years before by Rolly Tasker’s Siska IV and compared well with record-breaking performance of 6 days and 5 hours set by Alan Briety’s “Limit” set in 2011. The current record on the course is held by Tony Mitchell’s “Super Sled” that covered the 1,440 nautical miles in 5 days, 23 hours, 30 minutes and 24 seconds.

Two boats retired from the race due to equipment failure.

The remaining boats in the race are expected to arrive in Bali in a 7-day period following “Walk on the Wild Side’s” finish.
