The City of Banyuwangi on the easternmost shore of Java at the crossing point to the Port of Gilimanuk on Bali has the potential of providing a more convenient point of access for those traveling to West and North Bali.

NAM Air, a member of the Sriwijaya Air Group, inaugurated direct flight service between Jakarta and Banyuwangi on Friday, June 16, 2017.

Quoted by Kompas.com, the Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, sees great tourism potential via the new direct connection to Banyuwangi from Jakarta and connection to the rest of the nation via flights by Garuda from Surabaya to Banyuwangi.

Banyuwangi – a 30-minute ferry ride from the Port of Ketapang (Banyuwangi) means visitors to Bali’s west or northwest beaches can land and arrive at their destination in little more than one hour after landing in Banyuwangi.

Banyuwangi has invested heavily in improving the runway, taxiway and passenger terminal in anticipation of new investment in the area and growing tourism numbers. In 2010 only 8,000 air passengers traveled through the Blimbingsari Airport (BWX). In 2013, with services by Wings Air (from Denpasar) and Garuda Indonesia (from Surabaya) the annual passenger count rose to 110,000.

The commencement of flights from Jakarta with NAM Air will add an additional 40,000 seats per year for the Blimbingsari Airport.

Meanwhile, Banyuwangi is busily seeking more flight connections from Denpasar, Yogyakarta, and Makassar. Plans are also in the works to make Banyuwangi and an international airport in 2017 or 2018.
