Bali’s desire to develop medical tourism and become a center of medical excellence is slowly taking place with plans to open the new Bali Mandara Medical Center and news that the Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar has recently performed its fourth kidney transplant.

DenPost.com reports that officials at the Sanglah General Hospital hope to soon become a leader in Eastern Indonesia for kidney transplantation when in August a 5th patient is scheduled for a kidney transplant assisted by a training team from Jakarta's Cipto Mangukusumo Hospital.

The Medical Director of Sanglah Hospital, Dr. I Ketut Sudartana, said on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, that kidney donors are still limited to relations and family members with transplantation limited to good tissue matches between people in reasonable health and able to withstand the surgical procedure.

Transplant candidates and donors must also undergo legal, psychological and psychiatric consultation before the operation can take place.

The cost of a transplant is covered under the BPJS Medicaid program for both the donor and the recipient. Although BPJS coverage is only for a Class III room, Sanglah Hospital is upgrading patients to VIP rooms to facilitate closer medical monitoring.

The cost covered by BPJS for the donor is believed to be around Rp. 250 million and for the recipient Rp. 425 million.

Recipients require a week’s postoperative care before being allowed to return home.
