Three foreign tourists narrowly escaped death while trying to capture fish with spear guns snorkeling off Atuh Beach at Nusa Penida on Tuesday, August 8, 2017.

NusaBali says that three snorkelers were carried away by large waves and heavy currents before eventually making a safe landing ashore later by swimming to a nearby island.

The three divers were identified as Devin Grey (39) of South Africa; Daniel Anderson (21) from Denmark; and Sean Sutton (22) from South Africa. The three men were stranded on the small island for 17 hours, waiting for daylight on Wednesday morning for rescue.

One of the snorkelers, Daniel Anderson, suffered a serious wound to his back when large waves and currents tossed the man against a coral reef.

At sunrise, around 6:00 am on Wednesday, a combined team from the National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS), Police, Armed Forces, and the Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) were able to descend to beneath a high cliff where the three were sheltering, managing to bring all three to top of the cliff at 8:40 am.
