Jakarta Globe reports that Indonesia’s national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia has signed a Memorandum of Indonesia (MOU) with Vietnam Airlines  enhancing cooperation between the two carriers in various areas, including service supplies, maintenance, repair and overhauling of aircraft, cargo handling and flight code sharing.
Announced on Wednesday, August 23, 2017, Garuda said the MOU resulted from the recent visit of Vietnam's General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong to Indonesia where he met Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
The CEO of Garuda Indonesia, Pahala N. Mansury, commenting on the closer cooperation with Vietnam Airlines, Mansury said: "The partnership with Vietnam Airlines will expand our aviation network in Southeast Asia. Vietnam is a valuable market for Indonesia and through this partnership, we can offer more travel options between Indonesia and Vietnam. The agreement is also expected to increase trade and tourism by easing the access for Vietnamese tourists visiting Indonesia."
The MOU expands existing code share arrangements connecting Bali with Jakarta, Bali with Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh City with Singapore, Singapore with Jakarta and Hanoi with Ho Chi Minh City. "Aside from those routes, we will also be looking to develop another route in different cities in Indonesia like Denpasar (Bali) or Surabaya  (East Java) with Vietnam Airlines," explained Pahala.
Duong Tri Thanh, President of Vietnam Airlines, issued a statement stating he expects even strong cooperation between the two airlines as a result of the MOU. He foresees improved quality of flight service as one of the tangible results of that closer cooperation while passenger loads between the two countries are expected to double or triple.
