(9/10/2017) reports that for most of the past month the Water Blow Hole located at the southernmost tip of Nusa Dua in Bali has been closed to the public by the Indonesian Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) as a safety precaution necessitated by high waves striking the shoreline.

The Water Blow Hole is a popular “selfie” location for tourist visitors eager to catch the “natural geyser” resulting when waves strike the shore sending a vertical stream of water into the air.

In addition to closing the gate leading to the Water Blow Hole, security officials have also erected a bamboo fence and placed a notice warning the public not to approach the area. The poster advises that the Water Blow Hole has been temporarily closed due to high waves, that no lifeguards are on duty in the area, and those visiting the area do so at their own risk.

Security staff working at the location says that the area will be reopened to the public once the strong winds blowing during Bali’s traditional “kite season” subside.

The Managing Director of ITDC, Wayan Karioka, confirmed the closure as a public safety measure, saying the gate will be opened from time to time when conditions permit.

In the recent past, tourists visiting the Water Blow Hole have suffered minor injuries resulting being struck by incoming waves. Karioka said the ITDC was working with insurers to put coverage in place for tourist visitors to the area and discussing plans to put rescue personnel on standby along that stretch of beach beginning in November 2017.
