In an effort to break the cycle of poverty, the Provincial Government of Bali plans to facilitate for 1,000 professional high schools (SMK) graduates to secure jobs on cruise ships.

Quoted by the State News Agency Antara, Governor Made Mangku Pastika said: “The Government will take responsibility for all costs connected with passports, visa issuance, and airline ticket, You will not need to think about these costs that will be paid 100% (by the government).”

Pastika’s comments were made during a series of visits to SMKs in Singaraja, North Bali.

The Governor said the Province has allocated the funds to facilitate 1,000 graduates from poor economic circumstance to be able to work on cruise ships.

Accordingly, the Governor has asked profession high schools to seriously prepare their students and ensure they have the competence to work in the cruise industry.

“I asked that the schools survey the students from the lower economic sector. If these poor students desire to work on cruise ships, focus their education (in this direction). Also, enhance their ability to speak English in order that they compete for jobs on cruise ships,” explained Pastika.

The Governor also called on SMK high schools with open areas of land to build accommodation for teachers and student living at a distance from the SMK.

Pastika said SMKs must adjust their curriculum to meet market demand. “Don't let student graduating from SMK add to the unemployment totals. We must rationalize and focus on disciplines of expertise demanded by the marketplace,” said the Governor.
