The Bali Hotels Association recently participated in the International Coastal Clean Up day by organizing an island-wide clean up of beaches on Saturday, September 16, 2017, that covered 11 areas and involved 2,586 participants from 145 hotels, 4 schools, and other business units.

Ocean Conservancy first initiated the International Clean Up Day in 1986 with over 12 million people now participating annually worldwide.

This year, Bali Hotels Association mobilized its members and business partners to participate in cleaning up major tourist areas in Bali, including Tanjung Benoa, Nusa Dua, Jimbaran, South Kuta Beach, Kuta – Legian, Seminyak, Sanur, Berawa, and Tabanan -  collecting over 1,500 kilograms of trash.

“Being an island, Bali has thousands (sic) of kilometers of coastline and we do have an ongoing battle with wastes that washed up onto our shores,” explained Ricky Putra, the chairman of Bali Hotels Association. “Our members actively organize their own beach clean-up periodically and we are taking this opportunity to involve other business units as well to build more awareness on the issue and create a better synergy with all of the business stakeholders. This is an issue that requires everyone’s active involvement.”

This is the 5th year for the BHA to participate as an organization in the worldwide movement, growing from only 12 participants in the past to 151 participants in 2017.

Bali Hotels Association also actively collaborates with other organizations to create greener efforts that can be adapted by each of its members. One of the programs that the association has developed is the waste management system to create a better system for a hotel to adapt by promoting the “3Rs” (reduce, reuse, recycle) concept in order to achieve a “Zero Waste to Landfill” goal.

The Association also encourages its members to obtain national and international green certifications and have their businesses regularly assessed and tutored on achieving a more environmentally friendly standard of practice.
