Bali police have taken two men into custody in connection with the murder of Robert Gilhooad, the 63-year-old Dutch expatriate whose body was found in his rented home in the Puri Gading Housing Estate in Jimbaran on Friday, November 3, 2017.

Police arrested a man identified by as Winda Wilantara in Lampung, South Sumatra on Tuesday, November 7, 2017, a second man identified as An was arrested by police in Bogor, West Java on November 10, 2017.

Police claim the two men conspired in the premeditated murder of Gilhooad in a complicated web of passion and larceny.

As reported by, Wilantara was arrested in South Sumatra in possession of a car owned by Gilhooad that he had driven from Bali and across Java following the Dutchman’s murder. Police say Wilantara admitted the crimes and told investigators how he conspired with another man, identified only as An, to murder Gilhooad.

Based on the information provided by Wilantara, police tracked An to Bogor where he was arrested in the early morning hours of Friday, November 9th. Police described how Wilantara fled Bali driving the dead man’s car while his accomplice flew on a scheduled airline.

An unnamed police source said the two men planned the murder on October 24th but waited until October 26th to execute their crime. The police source said: “The temporary confession is that they wanted to steal the car of the victim. They were also jealous. They (the perpetrators) are gay.”

In piecing together the crime, police say Gilhooad was brutally murdered in the bathroom of his rented home using wires, wood, and metal poles.

Based on the confessions of the two men now in custody and the advanced state of decomposition of the body, police say Gilhooad was killed 8 days prior to the discovery of his body. Police said the significant deterioration of the corpse made it difficult to identify the dead man.

Police are waiting for both men to be returned to Bali to reconstruct the murder at the crime scene.

Police are also planning an autopsy on the man’s remains to gather evidence for use in the murder trial.
