The Minister of Energy and Natural Resources (ESDM), Ignasius Jonan, officially announced the downgrading of the alert status for the Mount Agung volcano in Bali from the highest level of “IV” (awas) to level “III” (siaga) on Saturday, February 10, 2018.

With the downgrading of the alert status the exclusion or “no go” zone was reduced from a radius of 6-kilometers to 4-kilometers from the crater’s edge. reports that the announcement by Ignasius Jonan was announced at an evaluation meeting on Mount Agung held with the National Disaster Mitigation Board (BNPB) held in Rendang, Karangasem on Saturday.
“Based on observations of the volcanic activity on Mount Agung over the past month, the PVMG (Center for Volcanic and Geological Disaster Mitigation) has recommended the lowering of the status of Gunung Agung from ‘Awas’ to ‘Siaga’, with a high degree of readiness and caution in effect at a radius of 4-kilometers from the crater,” said Jonan.
Jonan said the reduce exclusion zone from 6-kilometers to 4-kilometers means a number of local residents who evacuated their homes can not return to their homesteads.
The reduction in alert status was done based on the analysis of volcanic activity on Mount Agung that has decreased substantially in terms of seismic activity, mountain deformation and emissions. The head of mitigation for PVMBG, I Gede Suantika, said the mountain was now entering a phase of relaxation and recovery.
Officials now say the peak of eruptive activity occurred between November 25-29, 2017 that saw large quantities of lava and ash ejected into the atmosphere causing Bali’s airport to be closed for 2.5 days.
