Bali Governor Pledges to Challenge Jakarta’s Rejection of New Airport for North Bali

Despite the apparent rejection by the Central Government of plans to build an airport in northeast Bali, Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika has pledged to continue his battle to establish an airport at  Kabuhtambahan, North Bali.

As reported by Governor Pastika plans to call the Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, to seek a detailed clarification on press reports that the Airport of the North will not go ahead. According to the Governor, he has yet to receive a formal revocation of the plans for the airport from Jakarta.

According to Pastika, the news of the revocation of the North Bali Airport emanates from a survey conducted by the World Bank and Bali’s Udayana University. That survey focused on Bali’s infrastructure needs and termed the new airport as non-viable.

Pastika sees the construction of a new airport in North Bali as an essential part of a strategic plan for a more equitable distribution of the Island’s wealth to all corners of the Province. Moreover, two companies have been formed to spearhead the airport’s development: PT Bandara Internasional Bali Utara (BIBU) and PT Pembangunan Bali Mandiri (Pembari).

The Governor is upset that the most recent survey conducted by the World Bank and Udayana University had its results published without the coordination of the Provincial Government of Bali. What’s more, the survey has apparently already been circulated widely in Jakarta with no one in Bali apparently privy to the survey’s contents.

The Governor will reportedly attend a formal presentation of the survey in the coming days where he plans to continue to argue for the approval of the North Bali Airport.
