All major media in Bali report a fatal chain collision occurred on Jalan Raya Uluwatu near the entrance to the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Monument at mid-day on Friday, April 13, 2018.

A tourist bus carrying Chinese tourists was traveling in a northerly direction at a high rate of speed down a steep hill when it went out of control and caused collision that eventually involved 6 cars and 2 motorcycles causing numerous injuries and one fatality at the scene.

Police say that the bus first sideswiped a motorcycle traveling from the opposite direction in front of the Pepito Supermarket. It was at this point that the bus driver panicked and began to careen into a whole range of other vehicles. The bus first struck an Avanza sitting in its path that in turn ran into another Avanza and an Innova utility van that both ended up on the side of the road. The bus continued on its reckless path striking a motorcycle traveling on the road. The rampage continued as the bus struck two more cars and another motorcycle before hitting a pick-up truck and a Toyota Yaris economy-sized car, both parked on the side of the road. Still moving down the hill the bus then struck another Avanza coming from the opposite direction.

The man who died at the scene was a passenger in the pick-up truck who was disembarking his vehicle at the time it was struck by the bus.

Police say the bus driver, growing increasingly panicked at the mayhem he had caused, turned the bus sharply to the right and struck a Isuzu Elf that was in the process of turning into the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Park, before turning to the left and hitting another motorcycle before finally coming to a stop as it struck a roadside electrical police.

Police are still tallying the total number injured in the accident that left Ida Bagus Putu Adnyana (44) of Buleleng dead.

In total, 9 vehicles were involved in the chain reaction crash. At least four people injured in the incident have been warded at the Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar.

Police are still trying to piece together how the accident actually occurred with early theories believing that the brakes on the bus may have failed.

The driver of the bus reportedly fled the scene and is being sought for questioning by police.
