A Gala surprise gathering of close friends from Bali tourism industry and local government gathered at The Residence - the opulent private residence of The Nusa Dua Beach Hotel and Spa served as the venue for the event.
The Residence, originally designed and built exclusively for visits by the Brunei Royal Family, has a formal entrance, a dining room suitable for State dinners, private salons, a stair case of imported Italian marble, a private gymnasium, and opulent bathrooms with en-suite bathrooms replete with golden faucets.
Live music, free-flowing champagne and delicious food marked an evening dotted with remarks from friends and colleagues, some who have known "Jack Daniels" for nearly all of 30 years a long and distinguished career in Indonesian tourism.
In an evening in which friends took turns at the microphone to "roast" Jack, Melina Caruso-Mulyadi of the MMC Marketing Group and the Bali Forum paid tribute to Daniels for more than 8 years of dedication in producing the award-winning Bali Update now read by more than 15,000 readers. Recalling the development of the “Bali Update” Melina recalled: "Some of the early editions of Bali Update would be published and distributed 3 times a week. In fact Bali Update was sent out 15 times in March 1998. Bali Update had to grow up very quickly. By the 125th issue the Bali Update took a more 'high tech' approach," referring to the HTML format not utilized by the newsletter.
Recounting how updates had been from ships in New Guinea, phone booths in America and hotel rooms all around the world, Melina provided a humorous account of the "ups" and "downs" of making sure the next edition went out without fail every Monday, adding: "Bali Update has been cited by Time Magazine as 'Bali's Truth Ministry.' It has won many awards here in Indonesia as well as overseas. It has been quoted many times in prestigious publications from all over the world both online and in the print media."
