The Bali Tourism Board (BTB) has called on the Indonesian Ministry of Culture and Tourism to urgently create the new post of Director General of Cruise in order to provide the needed support to develop that important sector of the national tourism economy.
According to the Chairman of the BTB, Ngurah Wijaya, the suggestion to create a top post responsible for developing the cruise sector is the recommendation of the BTB’s Cruise Team comprised of operators and land operators with extensive experience in shipping operations.
Despite the lack of a positive response from the Ministry since the idea was first advanced by the BTB several months ago, Wijaya remains hopeful that a Director General of Cruising will be appointed by the Government in 2008.
Wijaya told the press that cruise tourism is able to bring foreign visitors to even remote areas of Indonesia, thereby sharing the fruits of tourism and the foreign exchange it creates to remote segment of the national economy.
Commenting on the new position of "Director General of Cruising," Wijaya said any person appointed to the role must be prepared to work with a wide range of government agencies and departments to remove current impediments to growing Indonesia’s cruise sector.
