Buy Balinese Products First
Mandatory Purchases of Agricultural Products by Bali's Hotels and Restaurants Seen as a Means to Boost Bali's Farming Sector.
(10/3/2008)
Jakarta Post quotes an educator at Bali's Udayana University who is calling on Bali's leaders to create legislation that will compel the island's hotels and restaurants to procure at least 40% of their agricultural produce locally.
IGN Alit Susanta Wirya recently told a seminar on sustainable rural agriculture in Bali that mandatory purchases of Balinese-produce agricultural products was needed to preserve and protect the island's farming industry.

Susanta, who heads Udayana University's biotechnology post-graduate department, feels that only a program of compulsory purchases from Bali's farmers will provide the needed momentum to keep agriculture economically viable in Bali.
Experts estimate that more than 1% of Bali's arable land is converted from agricultural pursuits to tourism each year.
Susanta explained that tourism has advanced in the past at the expense of the agriculture sector, and it is only fitting that agriculture now receive a reciprocal economic boost from tourism.
