Tempo Interactive quotes the U.S. Consul-General in Surabaya, Caryn R. McClelland, as concluding that Bali is safe following the execution of the Bali bombers.
Underlining Caryn's view that Bali is safe for American tourists, she said, "of course, we will ask American citizens to be careful, but we will not issue a travel warning for Bali and Indonesia."
Caryn's comments were made in Bali on Wednesday, November 12, 2008, following a meeting with Bali's governor Made Mangku Pastika. During her meeting with the Governor, Caryn discussed areas of possible cooperation between the U.S. and Bali.
The U.S. diplomat, charged with representing American interest in 16 Indonesian provinces, praised the security efforts of the Island's administration and its police force, adding, "I hope these efforts will continue."
U.S. tourist visits to Bali are on the increase following the recent easing of travel warnings for Indonesian by the U.S. government. For the period January-September 2008 a total of 52,340 U.S. citizens came to Bali, an increase of 28.39% over the same period in 2007.
