Tempo Interactive reports that the Bali-headquartered IX Udayana Military Command have issued orders that will see 3,500 – 4,000 personnel deployed across the island to ensure the peace and order over the coming Christmas and New Year's period.
The Commander of the Udayana Command, Major General Hotmangaradja Pandjaitan, told the press, "we will strictly monitor all entry points to Bali." Included in the points of heightened scrutiny are small ports, public ports, coastal areas and crowded public areas.
In accordance with local regulations, a number of event organizers and organizations have applied for police permits for special Christmas and New Year's celebrations. Those applications and any resulting special security arrangements are now being reviewed by police.
Because of the high traffic of domestic and international tourists visiting Bali over the holiday period, Major General Hotmangaradja said his troops would maintain a high state of alert throughout the period to guarantee the peace.
