Strong winds and high waves swept away three tourists swimming on Kuta beach on Friday, January 15, 2010, who were later saved by the fast work of Bali's professional lifesavers.
Beritabali.com quotes Made Suparta, the Coordinator of the Bali Lifesavers Association (Balwista), saying: "While (seasonal) bad weather is hitting Kuta Beach there were three foreign and domestic tourists who were swept away while swimming. Due to the readiness of (our) guards, all three were rescued."
Suparta said that the frequent periods of bad weather at this time of year cause the Bali life guards to be on high alert. "Visitors who want to swim are urged to be cautious, careful of strong currents and high waves," he said.
In anticipation of foul weather and its threat to swimmers, lifeguards are on duty during daylight hours patrolling the beach and manning the lifeguard stands.
"We also post red flags in certain area considered to be at high risk. We ask visitors to Kuta Beach to heed the warnings on 'no swimming' areas that we post," said Suparta.
There are six formal lifeguard posts on Kuta and Seminyak beach, each manned by 8 guards.
Meanwhile, there are 16 posts covering all the beaches stretching along Nusa Dua, Uluwatu, Jimbaran, Batubelig and Pantai Seseh.
