Located in the chain of Lesser Sunda islands to the east of Bali, Flores is a fascinating, mountainous and strikingly beautiful island. A chain of volcanoes dot the length of the 450 kilometer long island, creating dramatic alluvial valleys and canyons that were near impenetrable until only recently.
Labuan Bajo, in the West, and Maumere, in the East, are the two main gateways for tourists, both are connected to Bali by daily flights. A third gateway Ende, on the island’s south shore, is now served with three flights from Bali each week.
Once in Flores, an estimated 3,500 foreign visitors each year travel the Trans Flores highway on a 3-4 days tour.
A main tourist attraction of West Flores is the World Heritage Komodo National Park which hosted 34,954 foreign visitors in 2009. Nearby, Labuan Bajo is home to a seminal hotel and accommodation industry facilitating visits to West Flores and the little known hinterlands offering a wide range of nature and culture tourism activities.
