In Praise of Women

In Praise of Women – An Exhibition by Three Artists in Praise of the Female Form at the Ganesha Gallery at Four Seasons at Jimbaran Bay.

(7/3/2010)

The female form – from early cave drawings to more contemporary artistic renderings – has been celebrated in sculptures, drawings and paintings. The adoration and preoccupation with feminine beauty and grace is also the focus of a current exhibition by three contemporary Indonesian artists: Ida Bagus Indra, Ni Nyoman Sani and Teguh Ritmar Iman.

While artistic renderings depicting women have been dominated by male artists, this exhibition includes the striking work of Ni Nyoman Sani, one of Bali's most famous woman artists. The 7th child of a fisherman and a shopkeeper in Sanur, Sani's acknowledged talents as both a poet and artist initially caught the attention of her teachers. In recent years she has won international acclaim for her large, stunning canvasses of meticulously dressed woman whose sense of style and color have been compared to Klimt, as well as the work of the best fashion photographers.

Of Sumatran ancestry, Teguh Ritmar Iman was born in Bali. Although benefiting from studies at Yogyakarta's prestigious art academy, in fact, his artist father was Teguh's first teacher. Women dominate the canvasses of Teguh Ritmas Iman, shown in traditional market scenes or more intimate settings portraying a mother and child. Using bright colors and asymmetric compositions, he weaves colorful tapestries.

Ida Bagus Indra

Ida Bagus Indra loves bright colors and motherhood in his painting incorporating dynamic brushwork. The women in his paintings are always in motion. Of special note are his celestial dancers, such as the "Golden Position" which depicts one dancer in a progression of poses presented in split frames. Seductive and other-worldly, Indra's paintings reveal a master of contradictions.

Each of the artists in the current exhibition at the Ganesha Gallery at the Four Seasons Resort at Jimbaran Bay have distinctly different way of appreciating the female form, proving that, to the artists, the artistic approach to the faces and form of Eve remain limitless.
