28 local vendors occupying a vacant lot on Mertasari beach in Sanur are on the horn of a dilemma. They are asked to quit their long-established place of business in order that a local company PT Sanur Dinamika Mentari can commence construction of a new luxury hotel.

According to Radar Bali, hundreds of vendors and sympathizers converged on the Sanur Kauh Village Administration office on Friday, July 17, 2010, to protest their eviction. The vice-chairman of the Belanjong Association of Traders, Ketut Rasna, forcefully stated his membership's objections to their eviction. He said their remove was "anti-people" and "the investor has their legal argument, we, too, have a legal argument," stated Rasna.

Meanwhile, Made Mangku of the Develop Sanur People's Association claims the construction of the new hotel was incorrect from the start. "How can they build a hotel? The (required) set back form the beach is 100 meters," said Mangku in defense of the local traders.

In response, associates of PT Dinamika Mentari who are facing construction deadlines are asking the traders to vacate the land so the project can proceed. The proposed project, slated for completion in 2012, will occupy a 3 hectare site. To meet the completion deadline, the contractors must fence in the area and commence foundation work.

The head of the Sanur Kauh village, Made Dana, is attempting to mediate the impasse. He told the press: "We have all met here to discuss this reasonably. We have asked them to please vacate the land, before it becomes necessary to forcibly eject them," said Dana.
