The death sentence handed down to a 35 year-old U.S. citizen in Jakarta on Wednesday, August 8, 2010, serves, once again, as a stern reminder that the potential wages of involvement in the illegal drug trade in Indonesia are death,
Frank Amado was sentenced to death following his arrest last October when he was arrested with over 5 kilograms methamphetamines in an apartment he shared with an Iranian national in Jakarta.
Amado will automatically appeal his sentence to the courts, commencing a long programs of legal challenges and remission requests that can stretch decades before the then middle-aged American is potentially placed before an Indonesian firing squad.
The sentence handed down by the courts gives Amado the dubious distinction of being the first U.S. citizen sentenced to death in Indonesia. He joins the nearly 70 people now sitting on death rows in prison cells across the nation.
Counted among those condemned to die are a number of foreign nationals, including 18 from various African nations; 20 from China and the Middle East; 8 Australians, a Frenchman and a Brazilian.
Historically, only three foreign nationals have been executed to date in Indonesia: Ayodnya Prasad Chabuy, Saelow Prasad and Namsong Srilak. Another foreign national, Bunyong Khaosard, died in hospital while awaiting execution.
