A 39 year-old Italian tourist visitor fought back and ended the life of crime of an East Javanese purse snatcher on Saturday, August 7, 2010. Maria Cristiba Raggniati, who was riding on a motorcycles, had her hand bag grabbed by a passing motorcyclist on Jalan Tumbak Bayuh in Seminyak.
Trying to make good an escape, the thief, 29 year-old Bagus Gerlawan, grabbed the bag and sped off. Angry and determined to get her property back, the feisty Ms. Raggniati gave chase at high speed through the busy streets of Kuta for several kilometers. The young man finally turned into a small side alley which proved to be a near fatal mistake on several counts: the get away route was a dead end, the angry Italian diva was still in close pursuit and local residents had a appetite for instant street justice.
Local residents along the side of the alleyway responded by setting upon the young man who was relived of the woman's purse and beaten severely. According the Bali Post, only the intervention of a passing police patrol stopped Bagus from death at the hands of the irate crowd.
Bruised and battered, Bagus later confessed to police that he had made a brief career of targeting tourist visitors and that the Italian was his third victim in a single afternoon. Police recovered two stolen hand phones and a sum of cash together take by the man from the Italian, as well as a Brazilian and a French women - all in the in the north Kuta area.
The young man told police that he was forced into his life of crime due to unemployment.
