Efforts by Heri Susanto to own two Persian cats came to a tragic end on Thursday, August 12, 2010, when health officials at the port of Gilimanuk seized the 2-month-old kittens concealed on his motorbike traveling on the ferry from Java to Bali.
In accordance with Bali's anti-rabies rules that absolutely prohibit the import and export of pets, authorities quickly euthanized the two cats by means of lethal strychnine injections.
The remains of the cats were buried behind the quarantine office at the Gilimanuk port.
The official veterinarian assigned to the Gilimanuk quarantine office, Dr. Ketut Somen, stated his disappointment that many people still try to smuggle prohibited animals in and out of Bali. "We give no toleration if an animal capable of spreading rabies is discovered," said Dr. Sonen. "Any animal which we confiscate will be destroyed without reference to who is the owner or its commercial value."
It is not clear if authorities will pursue criminal charges against Heri Susanto in connection with his violation of quarantine rules.
