NusaBali reports that it is high time that Bali build a dedicated seaport for export items to safeguard the efficiency and competitiveness of products produced on the island. Made Sudana, a Bali-based exporter, blames the lack of a proper port in Bali as a major reason that Bali products are unable to effectively compete with items exported from Vietnam, Thailand, China and other international markets.
At the present time products made in Bali must be trans-shipped to Surabaya in East Java where they are usually onward-shipped to Singapore for consolidation. This is a time-consuming and expensive process that would be remedied, in part, by the establishment of a port in Bali.
Any increase in costs such as those incurred in trans-shipment, according to exporters, can be fatal to Bali products in the highly competitive international marketplace.
Among the main commodities being exported abroad from Bali are statues and carvings, wooden furniture, musical instruments, bamboo furniture, textiles, batik, songket, and clothing
During the first five months of 2010 exports from Bali totaled US$227 million, up from US$187 million in the same period in 2009.
