Gateway Community Center (GCC) is hosting a collaborative musical performance presented by Slovak artist Daniel Matej and the Sanggar Narwastu gamelan orchestra on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, in Sanur.

Promising in equal measure to be both eclectic and electric, East meets West as a local international gamelan group combines talents with an international musician dedicated to exploring new sound strategies.

The Wednesday gathering, open to the public without charge, is the culmination of a week's long experimental workshop held in Sanur. The goal: to increase the ability of the participants to find ways to incorporate their traditional musical skills, while remaining open to new musical ideas and perspectives. The concert will consist of improvised music and open scores by Matej, John Cage and others. Also appearing will be dancer and dalang, I Ketut Kodi of Singapadu, and Daniel Pastircak to talk about elements of art, both East and West.

Based on a cross-cultural engagement of Western European-trained and Balinese-trained musicians. Daniel Matej has been leading rehearsals focused on finding new sound strategies in improvised music during the past week with the group.

In 1995 he was invited to Germany as composer-in-residence of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program. Since 1996 he has taught at the Academy of Music and Drama in Bratislava.

Open to the public without charge, the evening with Daniel Matej and the Sanggar Narwastu Gamelan group starts at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at the Gateway Community Center on Jalan Danau Batur No. 3, Sanur, Bali. (Directly across from the Canang Sari Restaurant.)
